University of Detroit Mercy at Macomb Center named official Center
for Economic Education
April 24, 2008
The National Council on Economic Education and the Michigan Council
on Economic Education have designated the University of Detroit
Mercy at Macomb University Center as a Center for Economic
Education.
UDM Economics Instructor, Joseph Weglarz, will serve as director of
the new Center. "The goal of UDM's Center for Economic Education is
to promote economic literacy in the schools through teacher
professional development while increasing the number of economic
education programs from kindergarten through grade 12 as well as on
the university and adult levels," he said.
The UDM Center achieves these goals by offering teacher training
activities, providing consulting services, performing community
outreach such as the on-going symposia series, conducting research,
and developing and disseminating standards focused curriculum
materials to fit the needs and interests of the individual
communities.
The National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) is a nationwide
network that leads in promoting economic literacy with students and
their teachers. NCEE's mission is to help students develop the
real-life skills they need to succeed: to be able to think and
choose responsibly as consumers, savers, investors, citizens,
members of the workforce, and effective participants in a global
economy.
